Majors/Minors/Certifications

Physical Therapy

I am currently pursuing a major in Exercise Science on the Pre-Physical Therapy path at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). As an Exercise Science major, I will learn all about how the human body moves, how fitness plays a large role, biomechanics of the human body, nutritional aspects, and so much more. So far, I have learned so much in my Structural Kinesiology lecture and lab, as well as my Introduction to Exercise Science lecture and my Nutrition course. All of these classes have helped me get a feel of future courses I will be taking as an Exercise Science major. They have expanded my knowledge and significantly proven to me that I have chosen the correct major for myself. I currently am not minoring in anything specific, but a minor in Psychology would definitely be helpful for me in the future. Understanding the mental aspect of injuries is just as important as the physical aspect in my opinion. A certificate that would be helpful in my future career would be a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). This certificate would allow me to understand exercise concepts better, which would then allow me to help my clients. Pursuing a major in Exercise Science will hopefully allow me to reach my end goal as a Physical Therapist.

Why Exercise Science?

Exercise Science

I have wanted to be a physical therapist for as long as I can remember. Majoring in Exercise Science will ultimately help me reach my goal. I was involved in sports at a very young age. My parents put my siblings and I in YMCA sports when we were around 4 years old. I have always been active and have seen injuries occur in athletes for as long as I can remember. I have always been interested in injury and recovery, so learning about the body is something I love and look forward too every day. I am a very passionate person, and I enjoy helping others get their lives back on track. With a major in Exercise Science, I will be able to learn how to successfully and safely get someones life back to normal. I have volunteered and watched sports trainers and strength and conditioning coaches work with athletes and injured clients. Seeing a person have hope that they are going to get better with the help of a professional brings me joy. I am excited to one day be able to be the person who changes someone’s life. All of the courses under my major in Exercise Science will help me attain this goal. The main reason I chose physical therapy as my career choice is so that I can connect with people and change thousands of lives in the process. The world we live in today is full of negativity and hate, and I want to be the light for someone and change their life by making them feel better physically.

Career Goals

Physical Therapist

My career goals are to help as many clients as I can in a way that impacts them for the rest of their lives. I will continue to learn and have learned over the years how to be kind, compassionate, and a great listener. I am also skilled in problem solving and being flexible when something isn't working. I am looking forward to applying all of my knowledge and hard work one day in the workplace as a Physical Therapist. Currently, I am working on my bachelors degree, but soon after I receive my Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science, I will be able to apply that knowledge into a Doctorate Program for Physical Therapy in graduate school. After I complete my DPT, I will have lots of hands on experience, knowledge, and connections. My plan is to move up to Northern Indiana and pursue my dreams of becoming a Physical Therapist near my hometown. I have always wanted to give back, so working with student athletes and elderly in my community would mean the world to me. I believe that everyone deserves to live their life to the fullest, and if I can help someone achieve that, then I am willing to do everything in my power to make that happen!
